Most dog lovers that own or have owned a senior dog know about canine osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is an inflammation of one or more of your dog’s joints; If left untreated, it can result in debilitating pain for your precious pet and severely limit his mobility.
But you’ve no doubt heard about the wonders of joint supplements for dogs (and humans). Glucosamine, chondroitin, and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) are compounds that have been proven through extensive research and supportive studies to lubricate and repair joint cartilage and reduce painful inflammation. This is especially beneficial to senior dogs with osteoarthritis.
But did you know that giving these supplements to younger dogs can significantly slow down the onset of osteoarthritis in your pet’s later years?
In this best dog joint supplement review I will be looking at one of the most popular choices of joint supplements among dog owners (myself included), and an Amazon’s Choice as well. (Amazon makes it a ‘Choice’ when a certain large tally of customers have bought and reported satisfaction with product and price.)
PRODUCT I: Zesty Paws’ ALL AGES FORMULA 5-in-1 Multivitamin Bites ~ 90 Soft Chews ~ Available in Chicken or Peanut Butter
PRODUCT II: Zesty Paws’ SENIOR ADVANCED FORMULA 8-in-1 Multivitamin Bites ~ 90 Soft Chews ~ Available in Chicken or Peanut ButterCHEAPEST PLACE TO BUY: Amazon
MY RATING: 5 Stars
I.) The 5-in-1 All Ages Formula: The ingredients in these daily treats include vitamins, minerals and nutrients that support not only your dog’s joint health, but also heart health, immune and digestive system well-being, and skin and hair coat vitalization.
II.) The 8-in-1 Senior Advanced Formula: Includes all of the same joint, heart, skin and haircoat support as well as maintaining good digestive and immune system function. This advanced formula also has the added benefits of kidney and bladder support, and vision and cognitive brain function support, and is especially designed for senior dogs.
5-in-1 Multivitamin Bites This Everyday Vitality formula contains the joint supporting components, glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM. Research suggests that daily doses of these supplements given to younger dogs may slow down the seemingly inevitable arthritis symptoms that occur in dogs with advancing years, especially the larger breeds.
These everyday vitality chews also have an anti itch formula in omega-3 fatty acids along with B and E vitamins to nourish dry skin and support your pet’s shiny hair coat. They also contain probiotics and digestive enzymes for healthy digestion and can help dogs that have issues with diarrhea or constipation.
These Zesty Paws Bites also feature powerful antioxidants to boost your dog’s immune system, as well as a pure Coenzyme Q10 to support healthy cardiovascular function.
With all these health-promoting ingredients in one soft chew, it’s easy to see why there are 2 different formulas: One for dogs of all ages, and one for senior dogs.
The Senior/Advanced 8-in-1 formula This “Amazon’s Choice” product not only contains the powerful joint supporting ingredients of glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM and all the other healthy elements and vitamins that the 5-in-1 has, but it also contains added benefits for elderly dogs as well. It has vitamin C, cranberry and Ceylon cinnamon, a canine geriatric formula for healthy kidneys and bladder. Additionally, it contains lutein, zeaxanthin and folic acid to aid in cognitive brain function and eye health.
I personally give the Senior/Advanced formula to my 13 year old spaniel mix. She is a medium-sized dog (34 lbs.) so her arthritis isn’t as debilitating as it can get in large or giant breeds; So although we’ve had excellent results with these 8-in-1 Multivitamin Bites, I myself have never given them to a large breed dog.
Having said that, I must say that after about 5 or 6 weeks of daily doses of the treats, she is able to take noticeably longer walks (and will sometimes run!) and can swim for longer periods. And yes, her hair coat has greatly improved (she always had a little dandruff thing going on). Although she’s never had any visual or bladder problems and is still sharp as a tack, she seems generally happier and more active. We’re both delighted!
Pros and Cons(?)
I usually do a ‘pros and cons’ list in my pet product reviews but pretty much “all of the above” are the pros and I can only think of one con. That is: The number of chewy treats you give per day depends on your dog’s weight. So if you have a large breed dog, a jar of these chews would be 1/3 as economical for you than if you owned, say, a miniature dachshund.
I can definitely recommend this product, at least the Senior/Advanced Formula if you have a geriatric dog or a dog that is exhibiting early signs of arthritis.
As I mentioned before, research suggests that giving these healthy complexes to younger dogs may significantly retard the onset of osteoarthritis in later years. And all the other benefits are great for dogs of any age.
